EC2 Modernization Agent

It finds every legacy EC2 instance and Auto Scaling Group you still run and brings them up to the current generation, with your sign off on every change.

Upgrading old EC2 instances by hand is slow, risky, and easy to keep putting off. This agent takes it off your plate. It scans your account, builds a safe upgrade plan, and once you approve, carries it out with snapshots, automatic rollback, and an audit record behind every step.

Overview

The agent scans your account for instances and Auto Scaling Groups still running on older families like m4, c4, r3 and t2, and checks each one for anything that would block an upgrade. You get back a clear plan, sorted into READY, WARN and BLOCKED, so you know exactly what is safe to move before you commit to anything. Once you approve, it upgrades standalone instances in place and Auto Scaling Groups through a monitored Instance Refresh, taking a snapshot and keeping a rollback path and an audit record at every step. Then it updates the Terraform that owns each resource and opens a pull request, so your next terraform apply reinforces the upgrade instead of wiping it out.

Who it's for

It is built for platform, SRE and cloud operations teams sitting on aging EC2 fleets, on commercial AWS or GovCloud, who want these upgrades done safely and the same way every time, instead of by hand, one instance at a time.

Multi-agent architecture

EC2 Modernization Agent is built as a multi-agent system. An orchestrator coordinates specialized sub agents, each owning part of the workflow.

Orchestrator

orchestrator

Runs the show. It talks to you, holds the approval gate, sends each approved item to the right specialist, and writes the final report.

Discovery

specialist

Scans read only and checks every instance and Auto Scaling Group for anything that would block an upgrade, from compatibility and Reserved Instance coverage to local disk data, Elastic IPs, subnet capacity, warm pools, recent scaling activity and Terraform ownership. It hands back a plan sorted into READY, WARN and BLOCKED.

Instance execution

specialist

Handles standalone instances. It snapshots, stops, changes the type, starts again, and runs a health check. If anything goes wrong it rolls back on its own, and it refuses to touch Auto Scaling Group members or any instance that has drifted from the plan.

ASG execution

specialist

Handles Auto Scaling Groups. It creates a new launch template version and runs a monitored, rolling Instance Refresh, and rolls back the moment it goes sideways.

IaC reconciliation

specialist

Keeps your code honest. It updates the Terraform that owns each resource and opens a GitHub pull request, but only when a plan against the live account comes back clean. It never runs apply itself.

Revert

specialist

Your undo button. It walks back earlier upgrades from the audit trail, whether that is one resource, the last run, or everything up to a point in time. It proposes the revert first and only moves once you confirm.

The agent is read only until you say otherwise. Nothing changes without your approval, and every change ships with a snapshot or a rollback path and its own audit record.

Key capabilities

Scans read only across accounts and regions, on commercial AWS and GovCloud, and never changes anything without your approval
Upgrades both standalone instances and Auto Scaling Groups, with snapshots up front, automatic rollback, and a guard against acting on a stale plan
Opens a pull request for every change so your Terraform matches reality, and never runs an unattended apply
Keeps a complete audit trail, and drives every revert straight from that history
Treats failures as data, so one bad instance never stops or hides the rest of the batch

Outcomes

These numbers come from a sandbox run and offline tests, not from production. The Auto Scaling Group refresh, the revert, and the Terraform pull request are built and tested, but not yet proven on a live run. We will say so plainly until they are.

In a sandbox run, discovery found both legacy resources and mapped them correctly from t2.micro to t3.micro

Completed one standalone upgrade start to finish in 2 minutes 33 seconds, snapshot and health check included

Passes 166 automated tests offline, plus 4 integration tests against real Terraform and git

Proves its rollback paths by injecting failures on purpose
